Garage Door Security Tips

When we think about home security, we often think about securing the doors and windows to our home. Yet, we often forget the largest opening into our home - our garage door. Most often, the garage door is the easiest way to break into a home. The garage often holds some of the most valuable items we own, such as lawnmowers, vehicles, power tools, and other expensive things. The garage is also vacant most of the time, giving burglars the most time to operate. Here are a few tips to keep your garage door safe:
- Always close your garage doors:
The easiest way to prevent robberies is to always remember to close your garage door. Leaving your garage open is advertising your valuables to potential thieves. Don’t let thieves have the option.
- Windows:
A thief is likely going to try to look into your garage before they try to rob you. Don’t give them the chance! Install a garage door that doesn’t have windows. If this is not an option, consider frosting or tinting the windows.
- Bring garage door opener inside:
Never leave your garage door remote inside of your car. Try to bring the remote with you when you go inside. If a thief were to steal this, they would have easy access into your home.
- Install Motion Sensor:
A motion sensor light allows you to dissuade burglars from entering your property and alert you if anyone comes near.
- Secure your door:
If your garage door is getting older, it may be time to consider upgrading to a new one. Newer doors are made with better material to keep your home safe. A new metal or solid wood door is sure to keep thieves out.
- Avoid exterior keypad:
Like the garage door remote, avoid installing an exterior keypad for your garage. The pin number could be guessed or tampered with. It is best to keep your garage remote in your purse or with your other keys.
- Leave a radio on: If a thief arrives at your homes, and hears a noise coming from inside, they are probably going to leave. Simply leaving a soft radio on in your garage is a great way to deter a robbery.
The best way to keep your garage door secure is to treat it like the other points of entry into your home. You would not leave a window or front door open. You wouldn’t have a cracked window or faulty door. So why should your garage door be?
